About the School
Arsem Private Music School has been offering lessons of piano, violin, cello, recorder, flute, clarinet, saxophone, guitar and singing in the centre of Ljubljana since 2011.
Our primary task is to educate children. We begin with introductory music lessons for children aged four, five or six. It is a three-year cycle following the Edgar Willems method. At the age of seven or eight, the children begin to learn instruments and music theory. The learning process lasts six or eight years. During this period, they also participate in various chamber ensembles, orchestras and choirs. One of the important goals of our work is to encourage group playing and singing, socialising and fostering of friendships.
The third important branch of our work is offering lessons to adult learners. Some of our learners are in their twenties and some others are sixty years old: we welcome adults of all ages. We also arrange solfeggio classes and performances for adults.
Arsem Private Music School is a member of the Slovenian Music School Association and the International Willems Federation.
Programmes for young children
Musical Hours (for 4-year-olds)
Musical Hours are intended for children who are four years old. The programme represents the first step of a 3-level introduction to music, with the second and third step being Pre-School Music Education and Preparatory Music Programme. In introducing children to music we follow the method of the Belgian pedagogue Edgar Willems, who died in 1978. Willems advocated the accessibility of music education to all children, since with the right approaches we can improve the musical abilities of each child, and music is one of the essential elements for the development of a well-rounded personality. At all three levels, we use a variety of equipment aimed at encouraging the perception, listening and recognition of sounds. The second part is the rhythm, which we experience with our whole body. This is followed by carefully selected songs. The lesson concludes with natural movement to music, where we combine natural physical movement (walking, running, jumping, swaying, hopping) and the speed or tempo of the music.
Classes are held in small groups of up to 10 children.
60 minutes once per week. 50 EUR per month.
Pre-School Music Education (for 5-year-olds)
Pre-School Music Education builds on the knowledge and experience gained in the Musical Hours. Children have a better mastery of the elements of melody and rhythm, of which they develop awareness at this second level. This takes place most directly through various notations, such as notation of pitch or movement, notation of rapid beats, duration of sound, changes in volume, etc. The song repertoire increases and the feeling for tempo strengthens.
Classes are held in small groups of up to 10 children.
75 minutes once per week. 50 EUR per month.
Preparatory Music Programme (for 6-year-olds)
Our Preparatory Music Programme is the third and final level of introduction to music, following the Edgar Willems method. The children are presented with various arrangements (melodic, tonal name arrangements, etc.), they try their hand at playing the chromatic metallophone, they train their ears to listen to very small distances between tones (up to one sixteenth of a tone), and above all, they get to indulge in singing and enjoying the music. After completing the Preparatory Music Programme, children can enrol in our Music programme or take an admission test at a public music school.
Introductory music courses are taught by teachers with the International Willems Federation diploma.
Classes are held in small groups of up to 10 children.
75 minutes once per week. 50 EUR per month.
Programme Music
This is a publicly valid programme and has the same curriculum as the public music schools. It lasts six or eight years (lower or upper level). This programme comprises two weekly instrument lessons and one weekly music theory (solffeggio) lesson. We teach piano, guitar, violin, cello, recorder, flute, saxophone, clarinet and singing.
The two essential elements of this part of learning are group playing, which entails the formation of friendly ties, and public performing. We organize many performances in various locations, both in our school as well as in the practice halls of the Slovenian National Opera and Ballet Theatre in Ljubljana. Twice a year we hold large orchestral, chamber and choral performances at the Conservatory of Music and Ballet Ljubljana. We perform at the Ljubljana Music Schools Revue at the Slovenian Philharmonic and at the Knights’ Hall of the Križanke venue. In our performances we try to collaborate with music schools in Ljubljana and elsewhere in Slovenia.
We cultivate joint music making through chamber and orchestral music as well as choral singing. In preparation for performances we hold music weekends, where music practice is accompanied by friendly bonding, which we consider of great importance. These bonds solidify further at our yearly summer music camp, which takes place at the end of each August as an introduction to a new school year. Alongside the development of musical skills, we place great importance on developing a sense of community.
Arsem music school is registered as a provider of publicly valid programmes and issues publicly valid certificates.
The programme is intended for children and adults.
Instrument lessons twice per week for 30 minutes or once per week for 60 minutes and music theory lessons for 60 or 75 minutes per week. 145 EUR per month.
Instrument lessons twice per week for 45 minutes and music theory lessons for 60 or 75 minutes per week. 165 EUR per month.
Single music theory lesson 60 minutes 70 EUR per month.
Music for everyone
The programme is intended for adults and children who have already completed all six or eight years of our programme named Music. It is often chosen by adults with previous musical experience who would like to further develop their skills, or who decide to take up a challenge of choosing a new instrument. Some adult learners have no prior knowledge and are beginners on the instrument. In addition to the instrument lessons they can also attend lessons of music theory for adults. We have observed that adults are strongly motivated to take lessons and that they remain with us for a long time, some for as long as ten years or more.
Children who have attended six or eight years of music education also often express a desire to continue. So they continue receiving lessons in the programme Music for Everyone. The programme they perform is adapted to their wishes and they can participate in an orchestra and chamber ensembles.
We teach piano, guitar, violin, recorder, flute, saxophone, clarinet, oboe, singing and cello. Lessons are individual and tailored to each learner’s preferences.
